Statement welcoming the launch of the 3rd National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security

Ottawa, Ontario, 28 March 2024 – The Canadian Coalition for Youth, Peace & Security (CCYPS) welcomes the launch of Canada’s 3rd National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) after over two years of dialogues with civil society.

As a proud member of the Women, Peace and Security Network – Canada, the CCYPS has engaged in the WPS Dialogues FPS process with the objective of strengthening synergies between the WPS and Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) frameworks.

We are pleased to welcome this third plan, entitled “Foundations for Peace,” which references youth peacebuilders, young women, and the YPS resolutions 25 times throughout the policy. The Coalition is particularly enthused by the direct linkages and Government commitments to:

actively welcome under-represented perspectives and new partners to advance the WPS agenda, including by creating opportunities for enhanced collaboration with actors focused on the youth, peace and security agenda”

And,

“create opportunities and support efforts to enhance the meaningful participation of youth, particularly young women, across a range of efforts and initiatives related to peace and security” (pages 32-33, Foundations for Peace, 2024).

The Coalition looks forward to continued close collaboration with Global Affairs Canada, along with the other government signatories, and the Office of the Ambassador for Women, Peace and Security.
